Should you drive yourself, go on a group tour or a private tour! Here below, we list what we think are pros and cons for each type of vacation in Iceland.
We at Season Tours are often asked for information on self-drive tours. Not self-driving cars :-) but an itinerary with prebooked hotels and a car. We used to offer such tours but don't do that anymore. In our opinion the roads in Iceland with the single-lane bridges are not well suited for drivers that want to enjoy their travel. Even in summer, the wind sometimes reaches hurricane levels with swift winds double that. In wintertime, the slippery roads with black ice make it even harder to stay on the road and on your side of the narrow two-way roads.
Pros for a self-drive tour:
You decide when to start in the morning, which attractions to visit, and for how long you stop at each site. You can stop wherever you like.
Cons for a self-drive tour:
Nobody is telling you about the places you are visiting, the history, or the flora and fauna. You also miss out on all the fun facts! You can not enjoy a drink with your lunch since there is no tolerance for alcohol in your blood while you drive. You will simply be grounded and possibly lose your license.
Pros for a group tour:
You don't have to decide on where to stop, and the guide will tell you all about the history, flora, and fauna and probably a lot of fun facts! You can enjoy looking out the windows without worrying about the traffic ahead. You can even decide to relax or fall asleep during the drive. A drink with your lunch is not a problem.
Cons for a group tour:
You don't decide the time at each attraction, and you don't choose which attractions to see. If the group is big, fewer attractions are visited because of how long it takes to get in and out of the bus. You can't stop whenever you like.
Pros for a private tour:
You can decide when to start each day, which attractions to visit, and for how long you enjoy each place. You enjoy looking out the windows, listening to the guide telling you about the history, flora and fauna, and get to ask about anything while you are driven between places. You can enjoy having a drink with your lunch without worrying about losing your license!
Cons for a private tour:
The price of a private tour is usually higher than a group tour or a self-drive tour. The cost becomes a lot less per person when more people travel together and can even be the same as a group tour. Season Tours has two vans, one that can take up to 7 guests and the other one up to 13 guests.
We look forward to assisting you with your travels in Iceland where the best private tours take place.
