Hvalfjörður, Whale Fjord

Hvalfjörður or Whale fjord as it translates to English is a beautiful Fjord in the South West of Iceland.

Like other fjords in Iceland and as a matter of fact a lot of our beautiful landscape its formed by the glaciers. 2 million years ago this was a huge flat lava field far away from the ocean. The fjord is 30 km long, 4-5 km wide and 80 meters deep.

There is a tunnel under the Whale fjord 6 km long. Before the tunnel was built in 1998 travellers going north from Reykjavik had to drive the fjord, terrifying steep slopes when the roads were icy and the strong winds tried to push you off the road. But beautiful scenic drive on a sunny day.

In the end of the fjord is the highest waterfall in Iceland Glymur. On some of our tours we drive through the tunnel and on the 3 day Golden circle, Borgarfjörður and Snæfellsnes peninsula we visit Glymur and drive the Whale fjord.

There is a lot to see and loads of stories and folklore that take place in the Whale fjord. Come on our tours and get to know more about it.
