Vestmannaeyjar - Westman islands
As a part of a tour around Iceland late August, we visited Vestmannaeyjar in the evening and stayed over night.
6:15 The ferry Herjólfur to Vestmannaeyjar.
Check in at Hótel Vestmannaeyjar.
Dinner at Restaurant Einsi Kaldi.
Walk down to the harbor at 10:00 p.m. and witness the pufflings leaving their nests for the first time. The young puffins fly out when it gets dark to the first light they see, and that is very often the city lights. They then get lost. An old tradition is young kids and their siblings or parents go searching for lost baby puffins to release them early the next morning. You can take part in this!
After a good night sleep and breakfast.
Hike up Mt. Eldfell, which was formed in the eruption of 1973.
Hjörleifshöfði - short hike to see the puffins.
Sleppa - watch the pufflings released.
A not-to-miss museum, Eldheimar, the “Pompeii of the north"; and Surtsey Island, which was formed in an eruption in 1963 and has been preserved from the public to see how life begins in a desolate place in the middle of the ocean.
Sea life - beluga and puffin sanctuary.
Great lunch buffet at Tanginn.
2:30 Ferry back to the mainland.
Fun fact:
The puffins can live more than 30 years.
The puffins can dive 60 meters for fish and usually come up with many fish lined up in their beak.
The ferry Herjólfur is only 30 minutes between the islands and the main land.
