Itinerary for a private 4-day/3-night tour:
Day one, August 8th: The less travelled roads
9:00 a.m. Pick up at your hotel in Reykjavik
We drive the scenic roads Hafravatnsleið, Nesjavallavegur, and Grafningur to Þingvellir, the old Viking parliament and tectonic plates. At Þingvellir you learn about the history of the Vikings, walk around in the area, and have a drink of the purest water in the world.
From Þingvellir we drive the Uxahryggir road to Borgarfjörður, to Hraunfossar, where you see the water bursting out from between layers of lava. Next on the agenda is Deildartunguhver, the largest hot spring in Europe, where we also have lunch at restaurant Krauma.
Next on our way is a stop by the Grábrók crater, about a 20-minute hike up for the spectacular view over the area. When we have conquered Grábrók, we drive over the Holtavörðuheiði heath to Hótel Blönduós, where we dine and stay the night in a quiet area close to the ocean in Blönduós town.
Day two, August 9th: The north to Lake Mývatn
10:00 a.m. Checking out and leaving after breakfast for today's adventure
Our first stop today is at the Glaumbær turf house complex. This is a museum that shows how people used to live in Iceland up until the early 20th century. From here we drive to Akureyri for lunch and a short walk in the town. After enjoying the town for a while, we head towards Lake Mývatn, stopping at Goðafoss waterfall on the way. At Lake Mývatn we hike for an hour in the old lava field of Dimmuborgir before going to the Nature Baths and from there to Fosshótel Mývatn, where we stay and dine.
Day three, August 10th: The Diamond Circle
9:30 a.m.: leaving after breakfast for today’s adventure
Hverir is a colorful geothermal area for us to enjoy on our way to visit Iceland’s biggest waterfall, Dettifoss. After Dettifoss we go to Hljóðaklettar, where we hike for an hour in a scenic landscape sculpted by humongous floods in the past. Now we drive the scenic way towards Húsavík, stopping by Ásbyrgi for lunch and Hringsbjark for the great view. After visiting Húsavík, we visit the Jólahúsið (Christmas village) in Eyjafjörður before heading towards Hótel Varmahlíð, where we stay the night. On the way we stop and enjoy the beautiful mountain view of Hraun í Öxnadal.
Day four, August 11th: Kjölur highland road
9:30 a.m.: leaving after breakfast
