Benefits of living on a volcanic Island

Benefits of living on a volcanic Island

Icelanders are spoiled and obsessed with their geothermal activity. Living on a volcanic island provides incredible natural perks where rainwater interacts with hot magma underground to generate dynamic geothermal water and steam. The steam powers turbines to supply clean electricity, while the hot water is harnessed for central heating in homes and flowing hot water at faucets. Surplus geothermal heat is even routed under driveways to melt winter snow and save residents from shoveling.

Houses are heated and lit up by geothermal activity, and outdoor heated swimming pools are available in virtually all towns and cities. Swimming is an essential part of local culture and the school curriculum. Locals routinely enjoy lap swimming, hot tubs of varying temperatures, steam saunas, and social gatherings in these geothermal pools as part of a healthy, relaxing lifestyle.

In addition to local public pools, luxurious geothermal spas are popping up everywhere across the country. Popular destinations such as the Blue Lagoon, Sky Lagoon, Hvammsvík, Krauma, and Laugarvatn Fontana offer unique opportunities to unwind, enjoy mineral-rich thermal waters, sample local culinary treats like geothermally baked rye bread, and experience the rejuvenating powers of Iceland's volcanic landscapes.

At Season Tours, we have observed a steadily growing interest among our guests in visiting Iceland's world-class geothermal spas. To meet this demand, we designed a signature itinerary that perfectly balances active outdoor exploration with restorative relaxation. Our 5-day, 4-night tour features invigorating daily hikes of 4 to 5 hours through some of Iceland's most magnificent landscapes—from mountain ascents and geothermal valleys to dramatic sea cliffs and glacial lagoons. Following each day's adventure, guests unwind at hand-picked accommodations equipped with private geothermal hot tubs, saunas, and exceptional gourmet dining.

While most of our offerings are fully private excursions, this small-group Hiking and Spa Tour is a special shared journey for up to 6 guests. It reflects our own passion as founders for exploring the backcountry on foot and soaking in thermal waters afterwards. We currently have 4 spots available for our upcoming departure from July 28 to August 1, 2027.
