Tour description:

  • Day 1: August 30th, Golden Circle to Vestmannaeyjar Pick up after breakfast at 9:00 from the Center Hotel Reykjavik. Iceland's most popular attractions are on the so-called Golden Circle: 

    • Stop by the best bakery in Iceland. Mosfellsbakarí.

    • Drive the scenic route: Hafravatn, Nesjavallaleið, and Grafningur.

    • Þingvellir (pronounced Thingvellir) is the old Viking parliament site and tectonic plates. Here we walk around in the area and taste the spring water coming from the Langjökull glacier, travelling for 600 years and filtered in the lava field.

    • At Laugarvatn, we visit a historic site, Vígða laug (Holy Pool), that played a big part both times when the Icelanders changed religion.

    • Lunch at Restaurant Lindin.

    • The Geyser geothermal area with the spouting Strokkur geyser

    • Gullfoss is a whitewater waterfall in two steps, 11 m and 22 m.

    • Seljalandsfoss waterfall in the evening sun

    • 6:15 - 6:55 p.m. Ferry Herjólfur to Vestmannaeyjar.

    • Stay at Hótel Vestmannaeyjar.

    • Dine at Restaurant Einsi Kaldi.

    • Walk down to the harbor and witness the pufflings leaving their nests for the first time. The young puffins fly out when it gets dark to the first light they see, and that is very often the city lights. They then get lost. An old tradition is young kids and their siblings or parents go searching for lost baby puffins to release them early the next morning. You can take part in this!

  • Day 2: August 31st, South Coast towards East The day starts early after breakfast.

    • Hike up Mt. Eldfell, which was formed in the eruption of 1973.

    • Hjörleifshöfði, short hike to see the puffins.

    • Sleppa, watch the puffling released.

    • A not-to-miss museum, Eldheimar, the “Pompeii of the north"; and Surtsey Island, which was formed in an eruption in 1963 and has been preserved from the public to see how life begins in a desolate place in the middle of the ocean.

    • Sea life, beluga, and puffin sanctuary.

    • 2:30 - 3:10 p.m. Ferry back to the mainland.

    • Skógafoss waterfall

    • Dyrhólaey cape

    • Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and Basalt Columns

    • Eldhraun lava and moss stop and Fjaðrárgljúfur gorge.

    • Stay at Stracta apartments in the vicinity of Kirkjubæjarklaustur and dine at Systrakaffi in Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

  • Day 3: September 1st, Stracta apartments to Hallormsstaður/Egilsstaðir

    • The day starts at 8:15 a.m. after breakfast.

    • Stop at the broken bridge for the view of the outlet glaciers.

    • Coffee stop at Freysnes restaurant.

    • Hof turf church.

    • 10:30 a.m. Zodiac tour on Fjallsárlón

    • Fellsfjara (Diamond Beach)

    • Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and 

    • Lunch in Höfn.

    • Vestrahorn Mountain, Viking Village movie set, walk on water.

    • Audun's mineral collection in Djúpivogur.

    • Driving the mountain road, Öxi. 

    • Staying at Hótel Hallormsstaður in the forest.

  • Day 4: September 2nd, Hallormsstaður to Húsavík (long drive day)Starting early after breakfast.

    • Hengifoss hike.

    • Stuðlagil, basalt columns canyon

    • Dettifoss, east side, Europe's biggest waterfall.

    • Check in to Cape Hotel.

    • Geobaths in the evening.

    • Dinner at Gamli Baukur by the harbor.


  • Day 5: September 3rd, Lake Mývatn greater area

    • Horseback riding from Safarihestar by Mývatn.

    • Dimmuborgir hike to the Elf church.

    • Lunch at Café Dimmuborgir.

    • Hike Mt. Hverfell.

    • Grjótagjá

    • Hverir

    • Krafla (Víti crater)

    • Fuglasafn Sigurgeir's bird museum.

    • Grocery shopping!

    • Stay and dine at Fosshotel by Lake Mývatn.

  • Day 6: September 4th, Mývatn to Skagafjörður

    • Goðafoss waterfall

    • Akureyri town visit.

    • The public geothermal swimming pool.

    • Stoby the gorge on Öxnadalsheiði.

    • Accommodation and dinner at Hotel Hofsstaðir

  • Day 7: September 5th, Skagafjörður to Reykjavik

    • Þrístapar monument about the last death penalty in Iceland

    • Kolugljúfur gorge and waterfall.

    • Staðarskáli restaurant in a gas station.

    • Grabrók crater. Hike to the top for the great view over the area.

    • Borgarnes, home of the famous psychotic Viking Egill Skallagrimsson

    • Brákarsund and Skallagríms haugur.

    • Back to Reykjavik Hotel Marina at 5:05 p.m.
