Yet another eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula started at around 4 a.m. this morning. The hotels by the Blue Lagoon were evacuated, as was the staff at the power plant. The staff has now returned again to work since the flow of lava is mainly to the east and produces no danger. The smoke from the eruption comes mainly from burning vegetation that the lava flows over. No flights are cancelled and life goes on as usual. We don't know for how long this eruption will last but the length of the last eruptions in this area has been from a few months down to one day and that was the one that started on April Fools Day! It sure fooled us!
Driving now on the Reykjanes peninsula through the latest (hardened) lava fields is both magnificently beautiful and horrifying at the same time. Just thinking about the 3000 people of Grindavík that had to evacuate a couple of years ago and haven't been able to return because of the imminent danger and not knowing where the next eruption will take place in the area.
Update July 17th: This eruptions is probably also fooling us! It is getting smaller and smaller and will probably be over very soon.
